- The players take it in turns to place one piece at a time on an empty square on the board.
- After all the pieces have been placed on the board, each player in turn must move one of their pieces to a nearby empty square.
- No piece can be skipped.
- The player who gets a line of three pieces diagonally, horizontally or vertically first is the winner.
- If no player places three pieces in a row and repeats the same move three times, the game ends in a draw.
